7-Day Lemosho Route
概览
The seven-day Lemosho Variation Route is more popular than the six-day option because it splits the second day into two days, allowing for better acclimatization and a more gradual ascent. On the seven-day route, we hike from the forest camp to Shira Camp 1 on Day 2, with a reasonable elevation gain of about 2,000 feet. On Day 3, we continue from Shira Camp 2 to the less frequently used Moir Hut, at an elevation of 13,800 feet. Overall, exposure to this altitude helps the body prepare for the higher elevations encountered over the following days.
However, the hike from Barranco to Barafu, as well as the summit day, remains the same as on the six-day Lemosho Variation Route. The itinerary is still demanding, although the additional day on the mountain allows climbers to acclimatize better and cope more effectively with the physically exhausting journey than those choosing the six-day option.

行程计划
Hiking Time: 7 hours
Distance: Approximately 6 km
Habitat: Montane Forest
We depart from Moshi and drive to Londorossi Gate, a journey of approximately 4 hours, where you will complete the necessary entry formalities. We then continue by vehicle to the Lemosho trailhead, which takes about another hour. Upon arrival at the trailhead, we enjoy lunch before beginning our hike through the untouched forest, winding our way toward the first campsite.
Elevation: 9,500 ft to 11,500 ft
Distance: 8 km
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland
We continue along the trail as it leads out of the forest and into a landscape of tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rocks covered with lichen and hanging moss. As we cross lush, rolling hills and several small streams, we reach the Shira Ridge, before gradually descending to Shira Camp 1. The views of Kibo Peak from across the plateau are spectacular.
Elevation: 11,500 ft to 13,800 ft
Distance: 14 km
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Moorland
We spend the day exploring the Shira Plateau. This is a gentle walk eastward toward the glaciated summit of Kibo Peak, crossing the plateau to Shira Camp 2, which is located in the moorland near a stream. We then continue to Moir Hut, a rarely visited campsite situated at the base of Moir Hill.
Moir Hill offers a variety of hiking routes, making it an excellent opportunity for acclimatization. Shira is one of the highest plateaus on Earth.
Elevation: 13,800 ft to 13,000 ft
Distance: 7 km
Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
Habitat: Semi-desert
From the Shira Plateau, we continue eastward along the ridge, passing the junction leading toward the summit of Kibo Peak. As we proceed, we change direction toward the southeast, heading for the Lava Tower, also known as the “Shark’s Tooth.”
Shortly after the tower, we reach a second junction that leads toward the Arrow Glacier at an elevation of 16,000 ft. We then descend to Barranco Camp, situated at 13,000 ft. Here, we rest, enjoy dinner, and spend the night.
Although you finish the day at roughly the same elevation at which you started, this day is very important for acclimatization and helps prepare your body for summit day.
Elevation: 13,000 ft to 15,000 ft
Distance: 9 km
Hiking Time: 8–10 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
After breakfast, we leave Barranco Camp and continue along the steep ridge, passing the Barranco Wall before reaching the Karanga Valley Camp. We then leave Karanga and arrive at the junction that connects with the Mweka Trail.
We continue ascending to Barafu Camp. At this point, you have completed the Southern Circuit, which offers spectacular views of the summit from several different angles. Here, we set up camp, rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the summit day.
From this location, you can see both Mawenzi Peak and Kibo Peak.
Elevation: 15,300 ft to 19,345 ft (then descending to 10,000 ft)
Distance: 5 km ascent / 12 km descent
Hiking Time: 7–8 hours ascent / 4–6 hours descent
Habitat: Arctic
Very early in the morning (between midnight and 2:00 a.m.), we continue toward the summit, climbing between the Rebmann and Ratzel Glaciers. We head northwest, ascending across steep scree slopes toward Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging section of the entire trek.
At Stella Point (18,600 ft), we take a short rest and, weather permitting, witness one of the most magnificent sunrises you may ever see. From Stella Point, you may encounter snow along the one-hour ascent to the summit. At Uhuru Peak, you have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent. Faster hikers may reach the summit in time to watch the sunrise.
From the summit, we begin our descent directly to Mweka Hut Camp, stopping at Barafu Camp for lunch. Gaiters and trekking poles are recommended for the descent over the loose gravel. Mweka Camp is located in the montane forest, where fog or rain may occur later in the afternoon.
Later in the evening, we enjoy our final dinner on the mountain and a well-deserved night of rest.
Elevation: 10,000 ft to 5,400 ft
Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
After breakfast, we continue descending to the Mweka Park Gate, where you will receive your summit certificate. At lower elevations, the trail can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles can be helpful. Shorts and a T-shirt may be sufficient, but be prepared with rain gear and warm clothing.
From the gate, you continue hiking for another hour to Mweka Village. Our vehicle will meet you there and drive you back to your hotel in Arusha.
