概览

The Rongai Route is the only route that approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the northern side, close to the Kenyan border. Although it is becoming increasingly popular among climbers, the route remains relatively uncrowded.

Compared with other routes on the mountain, the Rongai Route has gentler slopes. It is an excellent choice for those looking for an alternative to the popular Marangu Route, seeking a more remote trekking experience, or planning to climb during the rainy season, when the northern side of the mountain receives less rainfall.

Rongai is a moderately difficult route and is highly recommended, particularly for hikers with limited backpacking experience.

行程计划

Hiking Time: 5 hours
Distance: Approximately 8 km
Habitat: Montane Forest

After breakfast at your hotel, you will be picked up from Arusha (1,400 m) and driven to Marangu Gate (1,980 m). At the gate, porters will organize and pack your luggage while you and your guide complete registration with Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA).

You will then transfer by vehicle to the Rongai trailhead, approximately 2.5 hours from Marangu Gate. The trail begins through high-altitude maize fields before entering a pine forest. The path is relatively gentle, allowing you to enjoy the surrounding scenery.

About halfway along the trail, you will stop for a lunch break before continuing toward First Cave Camp (2,600 m), arriving in the late afternoon or early evening.

The porters and chef, who move quickly along the mountain, will arrive ahead of you to set up the tents, boil drinking water, and prepare light refreshments for your arrival. After freshening up, you will be served a hot dinner.

Temperatures at the mountain camp can drop to freezing overnight, so be sure to come prepared for the cold.

Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
Habitat: Moorland

After a hot breakfast, hikers will continue ascending toward Kikelewa Cave (3,600 m). The trail passes through Second Cave (3,450 m), which is a good place to stop for a lunch break.

As on the first night, your tent will be set up before you arrive at camp. The porters will also prepare drinking water and water for washing. You will enjoy an afternoon snack followed by dinner prepared by our chef.

As this exposed campsite can experience temperatures below freezing, be prepared for a cold night.

Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Moorland

Today, hikers will follow a short but steep trail to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330 m). As you make your way through the moorland, you will encounter unique high-altitude vegetation, including giant lobelias and senecios.

At camp, you will enjoy spectacular mountain views while giving your body time to acclimatize to the altitude. As you take in the breathtaking sunset, a hot dinner and warm washing water will be prepared for you.

Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

After breakfast, hikers will continue eastward for a half-day trek toward Kibo Hut. Kibo is located in the “Saddle,” the high-altitude desert area between Mawenzi Peak and Kibo Peak.

There is no water source at this camp, but hikers can purchase bottled mineral water and soft drinks at the camp office. Breakfast will be provided, after which you will have time to rest and prepare for your summit attempt later that night.

Your guide will give you a detailed briefing on how to prepare for the summit night. Aim to be in bed before 7:00 PM so you can get enough rest before the climb.

Hiking Time: 7–8 hours to Uhuru Peak, followed by 6–8 hours descending to Horombo Hut
Distance: Approximately 5.4 km ascent and 15 km descent
Habitat: Scree slopes and snow-covered summit

You will wake up at around 11:20 PM and have some tea and biscuits before heading into the darkness. This is where the real challenge begins.

The first section of the trail follows a rocky path toward Hans Meyer Cave (5,150 m), which provides a good opportunity for a short rest. From there, the trail zigzags steeply upward toward Gilman’s Point (5,681 m), located on the rim of the crater.

This section is extremely steep and covered with loose scree, requiring considerable physical and mental effort. It can be one of the most challenging parts of the entire route. Use the famous Kilimanjaro “pole pole” approach—slowly and steadily—to conserve your energy.

From Gilman’s Point, you will generally encounter snow along the trail to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. Reaching the summit is an unforgettable moment of excitement and achievement—you made it!

The weather conditions at the summit will determine how long you can stay to take photographs before beginning the approximately 3-hour descent back to Kibo Hut.

After a short rest, you will collect the equipment you left behind for the summit attempt and continue down to Horombo Hut, where you will spend the night. The descent to Horombo will feel remarkably quick compared with the climb.

With approximately 14 hours of hiking in total, this will be an extremely demanding day, so prepare yourself for a long and challenging trek.

Later in the evening, you will enjoy your final dinner on the mountain. Soft drinks and beer are available for purchase at the camp office. Then, it is time for a well-earned night of rest, surrounded by memories and the excitement of having conquered Kilimanjaro.

Hiking Time: 6 hours
Distance: Approximately 27 km

After a well-deserved breakfast, your mountain crew will organize a lively celebration filled with dancing and singing. This is also the time to give tips to your guide, assistant guides, chef, and porters.

After the celebration, you will begin your 6-hour descent to Marangu Gate (1,980 m). All hikers are required by the national park authorities to sign out in order to receive their completion certificates.

Hikers who reach Gilman’s Point (5,681 m) receive a green certificate, while those who reach Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) receive a gold certificate.

After receiving your certificate, you will drive back to Arusha, where you can enjoy a long-awaited hot shower and continue the celebrations.
