When planning your East African safari, you might worry about facing a medical emergency in the middle of nowhere. Fortunately, the AMREF Flying Doctors are here to rescue you, offering air ambulance services with doctors and pilots on call 24 hours a day across the entire East African region. For $40 per person for 30 days, you can travel with peace of mind to any remote corner of one or more of the following countries: Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, and Rwanda.

Step on a snake? In a medical emergency, the Flying Doctors can provide professional advice or immediately evacuate you to a hospital in Nairobi, Kenya. For instance, if you are unfortunate enough to step on a snake in Kenya’s Masai Mara, help is just a phone call away to get expert guidance that could keep your journey going. If an accident causes you to break a leg severely while boarding a boat in Uganda’s Queen Elizabeth National Park, or if a pre-existing condition flares up unexpectedly in the middle of Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park (perish the thought!), a flight with a full team of medical professionals will soon be waiting at the nearest airstrip. The team will then transport you directly to a Nairobi hospital where further care will be provided.

Some Restrictions Please note that the Flying Doctors always assess what assistance is needed and only cover emergency aid and transport. Visa fees (when flying into Nairobi from outside Kenya), as well as hospital and treatment costs, are your responsibility. This does not replace the need for health and/or travel insurance. However, AMREF Flying Doctors can help streamline visa procedures to ensure you reach the hospital in a timely manner.

For Mountaineers Those undertaking mountain climbs should take note that Flying Doctor coverage does not include mountain evacuations. Therefore, please ensure your travel insurance covers high-altitude or mountain rescue operations.

Peace of Mind Your safety is our top priority, which is why we are happy to assist you in subscribing to Flying Doctor coverage. During a safari, we do our utmost to ensure everything runs smoothly, and 99% of the time, our guests return having had the best experience of their lives.

However, keep in mind that you are traveling to an untamed natural realm where wildlife dominates and the unexpected can happen. The Flying Doctors have been in the skies since 1957 for precisely this reason—allowing safari enthusiasts to travel with complete peace of mind. Because we all enjoy a bit of adventure—just not too much!

Tanzania Travel Insurance We require all guests to purchase appropriate travel insurance. Travel insurance covers not only medical expenses but also other costs such as lost or damaged luggage.

Tanzania Cancellation Insurance We strongly recommend purchasing trip cancellation insurance. In certain instances, only a partial refund is issued upon long-distance trip cancellation. Please check with your insurance provider to ensure you have suitable coverage in place.
