6 Day Marangu Route
概览
The Machame Route is the best choice for those who have only six days to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, as it offers a superior acclimatization profile. Compared to other six-day routes, Machame exposes climbers to higher altitudes earlier (on Day 3), which triggers the body’s adaptation process. However, this route requires climbers to be in good physical condition to handle the challenging ascents and descents.
The six-day Machame variation is a difficult route. Days 4 and 5, in particular, combine to create a very demanding schedule. Day 4 involves a full day’s trek from Barranco to Barafu. Following dinner and a short rest, the long and grueling summit attempt begins around midnight. The six-day Machame route requires 19 to 24 hours of high-intensity trekking at extreme altitudes, separated by only 4 to 6 hours of sleep.

行程计划
Trekking Time: 5 hours
Distance: Approx. 8.1 km
Habitat: Mountain Rain Forest
The drive from Moshi to Kilimanjaro National Park Gate takes about 50 minutes. The journey passes through Marangu Village, located on the lower slopes of the mountain. Upon arriving at the park gate, all hikers are required to register at the park office and make final preparations for the climb. Porters can be seen organizing and loading bags containing food, water, cooking gas, and most of your equipment. Make sure you keep all essential daypack items with you (at least drinking water, a packed lunch, and extra clothing), as the porters hike at a much faster pace than the climbers.
Our guides will assist you with any additional information or needs. You will then leave the park gate behind and ascend along a cleared ridge trail through the rainforest. This mist-shrouded forest, draped in dripping beard moss, is also home to most of Kilimanjaro’s wildlife. A few minutes past the gate, a more scenic parallel forest path branches off to the left. Traversing through the underbrush along a stream's edge, this trail gives you the option to rejoin the main route after a 1.5-hour hike or about an hour before Mandara Hut.
Your first overnight stop, Mandara Hut, consists of a cluster of wooden A-frame huts set in a forest clearing. Each hut contains 6 to 8 sleeping berths equipped with solar lighting. The campsite has a total capacity of 60 climbers. Fresh water is piped to the camp from an upstream spring, and flush toilets are available behind the main hut. Dinner is prepared by our chef and served in the communal dining hall.
Trekking Time: 6 hours
Distance: Approx. 11.6 km
Habitat: Moorland
Starting from Mandara Hut, the trail passes through a short stretch of forest and skirts the base of Maundi Crater before entering the transition zone between the rainforest and the moorland. It is well worth taking a short detour to climb to the rim of Maundi Crater for your first truly impressive view of Kibo Crater. On a clear day, Kibo Peak glistens in the distance, displaying her majestic glaciers in the morning sun.
Once you enter the open moorland, you will have the chance to see some of Kilimanjaro’s most spectacular flora—endemic giant lobelias growing up to 3 meters tall, as well as giant groundsels (Dendrosenecio kilimanjari) reaching heights of up to 5 meters! After about 6 hours of hiking from here, you will reach Horombo Hut, where a bowl of hot washing water, rest, dinner, and an overnight stay await you.
Trekking Time: Approx. 4.5 hours (Roundtrip)
Habitat: Moorland / Alpine Desert
Horombo Hut is a village of huts nestled on a small plateau, with architecture similar to Mandara, but with a total capacity of 120 climbers! Horombo is usually bustling with hikers, guides, and porters, filled with an atmosphere of adventure and excitement. Here, you will meet trekkers both ascending and descending the mountain.
This extra day and night at Horombo is dedicated to further acclimatization. A hike toward Mawenzi Hut, passing Zebra Rocks along the way (approx. 3 hours up and 1.5 hours down), is strongly recommended. This hike will significantly aid the acclimatization process. Remember to drink plenty of fluids and move slowly (pole pole)! All meals for the day are served at the hut. Turn in early to get a good last night's rest.
Trekking Time: 6 hours
Distance: Approx. 9.6 km
Habitat: Alpine Desert
After breakfast, you continue your ascent into the alpine desert habitat. From Horombo, two trails lead up to the "Saddle" (the wide ridge situated between Mawenzi Peak and Kibo Peak). You can choose between the upper route (right-hand fork) and the lower route (left-hand fork). The upper route should be very familiar, as you walked most of it the previous day on your acclimatization hike toward Mawenzi Hut. This section is quite rocky and eroded.
The recommended lower route (left-hand fork) is easier and nearly an hour shorter; it also passes the last water point at an elevation of 4,130 meters. You must fill your water bottles with all the water you will need until your return to Horombo Hut two nights later (unless you choose to purchase bottled mineral water at Kibo Hut). Once again, remember to pace yourself slowly (pole pole) and stay well-hydrated!
Situated in the barren alpine desert, Kibo Hut is a stone block house featuring bunk beds for up to 60 climbers, though there is no running stream nearby. However, bottled mineral water and soft drinks are available for purchase at the camp office. Long-drop platform toilets are located behind the hut.
The summit now lies 1,195 meters above you, and you will begin your final ascent that same night. Prepare your gear, trekking poles, and warm layered clothing for the summit push. Be sure to replace your headlamp and camera batteries, and carry spares. To prevent water from freezing, it is wise to carry your drinking water in an insulated flask or thermos. Go to bed around 7:00 PM to get as much rest and sleep as possible.
Trekking Time: 7–8 hours to Uhuru Peak, 6–8 hours descent to Horombo Hut
Distance: Approx. 5.4 km ascent and 15 km descent
Habitat: Scree slope and ice-capped summit
You will be awakened around 23:20. After some hot tea and biscuits, you step out into the darkness—this is where the true challenge begins. The first section of the trail follows a rocky path up to Hans Meyer Cave (5,150 m), which serves as an excellent rest stop. The path then zigzags up to Gilman’s Point (5,681 m) on the crater rim. This stretch is extremely steep with heavy scree, demanding immense physical and mental exertion. It is arguably the most demanding portion of the entire route. Keep to the steady Kilimanjaro shuffle (pole pole) and move slowly.
From Gilman’s Point, you will usually encounter snow all the way to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. Pure exhilaration and a sense of accomplishment—you made it! The weather conditions at the summit will dictate how long you can stay to take photographs before beginning the 3-hour descent back to Kibo Hut. After a short rest, you will gather all the gear left behind for the climb and head down to Horombo Hut (approx. 3 hours) for your overnight stay. The return trek to Horombo Hut will feel surprisingly fast compared to the ascent. Total hiking time for the day is around 14 hours, so prepare yourself for a grueling journey. Late in the evening, you will enjoy your final dinner on the mountain (soft drinks and beer are available for purchase at the camp office) and a well-deserved sleep, filled with vivid memories and quiet emotion.
Trekking Time: 6 hours
Distance: Approx. 19.7 km
After breakfast, you continue your descent for about 6 hours, passing Mandara Hut on your way down to Marangu Gate. It is strongly advised not to hand over any tips to the porters until both you and all your gear have safely arrived at the gate. Click here for more information on tipping. At Marangu Gate, you will sign your name and details in the official register. This is also where successful climbers receive their summit certificates: those who reached Gilman’s Point (5,685 m) receive a green certificate, while those who reached Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) receive a gold certificate. You will then be transferred back to your hotel for a long-awaited hot shower, dinner, and well-earned celebrations.
