Overview

Ol Doinyo Lengai means “Mountain of God” in the Maasai language. The summit of this stratovolcano stands at 2,962 meters and offers a direct view into the crater of Tanzania’s only officially recognized active volcano, which is also the world’s only carbonatite volcano. Eruptions have been recorded since 1883, and the largest of them deposited volcanic ash as far as Loliondo, 100 kilometers to the northwest on the Kenyan border.

It is located in northern Tanzania, just south of Lake Natron in the Great Rift Valley, in the heart of Maasai territory, where the local people regard it as a sacred mountain. Looking north from the summit crater, the hot, barren salt flats of Lake Natron stretch into the distance. To the south lie the Crater Highlands and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The eastern horizon is dominated by Mount Kilimanjaro, and to the west are the forested escarpment and hills that form the western slope of the Great Rift Valley. Lengai erupts every seven years, with thick plumes of smoke rising from the crater.

Itinerary

From Arusha or Karatu you will drive to Ol Doinyo Lake Natron.

Lake Natron is a soda lake at the foot of the active Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano. The area around Lake Natron is often described as having a desolate, almost lunar beauty. It is located in northern Tanzania. The nearest towns to Lake Natron are Arusha in Tanzania and Magadi in Kenya. It is the world's most important breeding ground for lesser flamingos.

East Africa has 1.5 to 2.5 million lesser flamingos, three quarters of the world's total, and most of them hatch at Lake Natron. Food is plentiful, nesting sites are abundant and, most importantly, the lake is remote and undisturbed. The lake and its ecosystem provide a livelihood for local communities.

Walking around the lake and visiting the streams and waterfalls on the nearby escarpment makes for a wonderful adventure away from the crowds.

There are many campsites near the lake, and it is also the base for climbing Ol Doinyo Lengai.

  • Accommodation at Moivaro Lodge
  • 3 meals included

You will climb Ol Doinyo Lengai at midnight. The ascent and descent will take 5-7 hours.

It is possible to walk across the crater floor. Climbing Ol Doinyo Lengai is very challenging because of the daytime heat, lack of water, steep and unsuitable ash and fragile rock slopes, and considerable altitude gain. Usually you start the climb in the early morning to reach the summit at sunrise. Shorts and a warm jacket are suitable for the climb, and long trousers are also good, since the summit can be cold before dawn. The approach route from the northwest allows an early descent from the summit in the morning shade.
